Hardening Off Tomatoes Earlier & Easier Than Ever Before

Hardening Off Tomatoes Earlier & Easier Than Ever Before
Anyone here in 2024? I've watched all this dudes videos for years. Wish he'd do more.
Where have you been. This is an awesome and inspirational channel.
Microwave? Microwaving is about the worse thing one could do to anything.
Thanks for the metric translations! I'm watching from New Zealand and it drives me nuts having to google every few minutes what the equivalent temperature or weight is when I'm watching an American video.
Small exception to the rule. If pine needles keep accumulating, they create a separate layer of soil above the mineral soil...this, combined with the rain, creates some acidic humus due to the humic acids and tanins. But this happens only on certain occasions (abscense of mixing of layers) Where i live, soil is chalky and dry (pine needles accumulate and most of the times, the rain can't leach tanins and various acids from this layer) but underneath pine trees, this humus layer i described is way more acidic (ph 5.5) than the calcareous soil underneath.
Make the slits higher off the ground so you only get slugs and not other insects you might want to keep they aren't all bad
Can't you test it yourself?
Your content is still spot on. Have you ever thought about doing an update video showing your gardens today?
sad to see 10 years later, they changed the brass spigot to plastic one.
Thank You
❤
What if you shredded the high carbon pile and added more moisture and air? I know this is great stuff but I am sure it could be made faster.
Hi! I'm trying to watch the videos on tea and smoothies, but it says they're private, how do I watch them? Thank you!
Will adjust how I use eggshells after seeing this.
I've caught loads thanks so much
It’s in reality difficult to change the ph of the soil. The biggest factor increasing soil ph by far is using municipal tap water which typically comes out at a ph of 8.0-9.5 due to the addition of chloramine. Most municipalities no longer use chlorine to kill microorganisms. If you are using municipal water and believe ph is the reason for poor plant health acidifying the water with vinegar is your best options This makes automatic watering challenging unless you install a dosatron. Using a dosatron makes sense for commercial operations. For home use storing water in a cistern and adding a small amount of dilute vinegar can work. To get the amounts correct requires ph testing. Typically one tablespoon of 7% vinegar will bring 10 gallons of city water to a ph of around 6.0 though this can vary greatly depending on what the water ph in in your area. Where I live in San Francisco the municipal water is an atrocious ph of 9.4. Well water is usually close to neutral but can be either acidic or alkaline thigh it’s never anything close to chlorinated water. Well water can be problematic due to high dilute levels especially calcium which can accumulate in the soil especially in potted plants. Generally soil that is healthy is slightly acidic due to the fermentation of microorganisms. A high ph can make plant nutrients convert to a non available form. A high ph can also reduce microorganisms growth which are needed to make nutrients available. In reality on less you have a soil ph problem it’s better to not try to change it. In an ideal biome the ph will self correct. There are cases when the biome is not healthy and intervention may then be needed. It not as simple as just assuming that plants that prefer acidic soil will do better if you acidify. If your blueberries are growing well then it speaks for itself. If they are not then ph may be an issue but it’s far more likely to be related to watering or fertilization practices or the growing conditions. Best, Mats H
Thx
Brilliant! Tx. Crushed egg shells next?
great Video . I have massive slugs the size of an index finger Think they are called introduced Spanish slugs .Will try this method as commercial baits do not work and are every expensive .
Why are humans so obsessed with killing others? Be a better person.
Cool
Just a tour would be great! 😊
About to do this today! Thanks!
Whats the flour for? I would think only yeast, sugar, and water is all u need.
Do you know what the ratio of fungal to bacteria? I heard 2:1 is minimum but 4:1 is even better. 4 times more fungus than bacteria.
Oh yeah, now that's one hell of a tip. The slugs have been massacring all of my veg and flowers after so much rain here in Italy. Great short to the point video. Heading right off now to go git me some o' that yeast. Well done, thanks. I've subscribed.
Ive tried nematodes, theyre still thriving. The snails have taken over as they arent affected by nematodes for slugs. Theyve eaten everything, even foxgloves and alliums. My garden looks like a wasteland. Im so angry and sad. Ill get these going, as well as my bucket of salt water that i wander round, picking them off with, and chucking in. Thanks!❤
Great video! Can I use boiled eggshells, or should I only use fresh cracked eggshells?
If the spent solution is poured onto the garden will the dead slugs harm birds.
Great tried it first night out caught 16 slugs thanks
This video was great, and then wrestling with the cat at the end was the cherry on top.
Thanks for the video, i have about 5-6 hours of sun from tree canopy. Question, I have 6' stake but would like to know what were the tall stakes you were using you mentioned but couldn't quite make out the audio. :)
Very helpful thank you
Thank you! I have a hundred slugs already in 2 days! They seem to die even when sipping the solution. Even my shallow trays have dead slugs in them. It has been raining a fair amount here in Indiana where I live. Does having wet straw all over my beds make more slugs? I have never had such a slug problem.
Thanks!
That's way too much work. Here is how: 1. Let eggshells dry in any convenient place. 2. Crumble between fingers in hand. 3. Sprinkle on garden.
Save yourself the trouble & buy some dolomite powder for your garden (or as a supplement to your compost bin or wormery) , but don't overdo it in the soil and disrupt the pH level
Bacteria don't degrade comlex lignin, they feed on simple sugars, soil fungi feed on lignin/high c:n
I'm thinking that the only loss in nitrogen that would be noticeable is in the first year of using wood chip mulch. After that, once the decomposition process has begun to establish itself with the fungi, bacteria and critters, you would have a net gain of nitrogen. I just started my garden this year, in heavy clay soil covered with 2 inches of mushroom compost and about 6 inches of wood chips. I planted my plants directly in the compost and peeled back the wood chips in those areas until the plants get established, then I'll push the wood chips back around the plants as they get established. I'm still in the planting stage, but so far things are looking good. The stuff that I planted from seed seems to be germinating well and the few transplants seem to be struggling more than the direct sown stuff. My strategy will be to keep an eye out on the plants and if they start to show signs of struggle I will add fertilizer, at least in the plant zone. I suspect that I'll only have to this for the first year. I have a Utility tree company dumping wood chips on my property for free right now. So far I've gotten 4 big loads delivered. It's mixed species with twigs, leaves and needles. Some is hardwood, some soft, and probably some stuff like cedar and some black walnut. It will all be used as is. I have 3 acres here so I have plenty of places to use them. I also have a tractor backhoe to move them around and turn the piles. I told the tree guys to keep the loads coming until I say to stop, which won't be in the foreseeable future.
Life saver!👍
I'm curious why it's well known to use pine needles in soil and as mulch. Obviously it can't hurt or people would stop using it. Is making a tea from needles going to transfer the acidity? It seems that's what's happening in these forests.
This was a wonderful video. I learned a lot. You introduced me to a lot of perennials that have never heard of. I'm sad you don't make videos anymore. Thank you
What about a fertilizer with Amino Acid Chelated ?
👍🏻👍🏻
Cool video. I hope you have fun at the market.
I find that a little confusing, one does not plant seeds, "planting" is putting a "plant" in the soil, "seeding" is putting a "seed" in the soil. Thus we have "planting" schedules and "seeding" schedules.
Thank you, will try but buy a thermometer first.
Thanks!
Mining for fertiliser is the problem. Watwr used to produce or process, but this vid was fantastic and i got good value.
Do you eat the purslane stems , also do you eat the stems and everything of the Claytonia?
